AS A STUDENT OR PGWP HOLDER IN CANADA, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR

T4 REFUND ON WORK DONE ON SIN.

If you're an international student working part-time on your SIN, you're likely eligible for a T4 refund.

Here's how it works:

  • When you work any job in Canada, your employer deducts income tax from your paycheck

  • At the end of the year, you receive a T4 slip showing how much income you earned and how much tax was taken

  • If you earned under $15,000–$20,000, you likely overpaid tax

  • We file your tax return and claim that refund from CRA — no hassle

  • Most students get $400 to $2,200 back, depending on income, tuition, and rent

GST HST CREDITS

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free payment students can receive every 3 months, just for living in Canada — even if you didn’t work.

✅ It’s available in all provinces and territories
💰 You can get up to $502/year based on your income and family size
📅 Payments are made in July, October, January, and April

You must file your taxes to receive it — even if your income is $0

TUITION CREDITS

(Available Across Canada)

If you paid for college or university in Canada, you can claim the tuition tax credit — even if you didn’t work.

✅ Available to students in all provinces
💰 You can claim 15% of eligible tuition fees as a non-refundable credit
🔁 Unused tuition credits can be carried forward or transferred to a parent, grandparent, or spouse

Example: $5,000 tuition = $750 tax credit
You must have a valid T2202 slip from your school to claim it.

CLAIM MEDICAL EXPENSES AND CHARITABLE DONATIONS

❤️ Medical & Charitable Claims (Boost Your Refund)

Even small amounts can help lower your taxes — if you claim them right.

🏥 Medical Expenses

✅ If you spent over $2,635 or 3% of your income, you can claim the rest
✅ Includes dental, prescriptions, eye care, and more
💰 You get 15% back on eligible medical expenses above that threshold

Example: $3,500 in medical → Claim ~$865 → Refund +$130

🙏 Charitable Donations

✅ First $200 = 15% credit
✅ Above $200 = 29% or 33% (if income is high)
💰 Combine donations with your spouse for bigger credit

Example: $500 donation → Claim = $113–$135 in credits

📄 Make sure to keep your receipts — you don’t submit them to CRA, but they may ask later.

CLAIM SPOUSAL CREDITS EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT IN THE COUNTRY

💑 Spousal Credit — Even If Your Spouse Is Outside Canada

Yes — you can still claim the spousal amount even if your spouse doesn’t live in Canada.

✅ Here's how it works:

  • If your spouse had little to no income in 2024 (under ~$14,398), you may qualify

  • You must be supporting them financially

  • You’ll need to report their worldwide income (even if it's earned outside Canada)

  • You must also provide proof (bank transfers, WhatsApp messages, etc.) if CRA asks

💰 The spousal amount gives you a non-refundable credit worth ~$2,350 — reducing your tax bill directly

CLAIM DEPENDENTS CREDIT, WHETHER IT IS YOUR MOTHER OR FATHER, SON OR DAUGHTER, UNCLE OR AUNT, BROTHE

If you financially supported someone in 2024, you may be able to claim them as a dependent — even if they’re not your child.

✅ Who Can Be a Dependent?

You may claim a credit for:

  • 👩‍👩‍👧 Your mother or father (even if outside Canada)

  • 👶 Your son or daughter (under 18 or with a disability)

  • 👴 Your grandparents

  • 👬 Your brother, sister, uncle, aunt, or any relative you support

  • Must be dependent on you for food, shelter, or money

💰 What You Get:

  • Up to $2,350–$7,500 in non-refundable credits

  • May include the Canada Caregiver Amount if they’re ill or elderly

  • You’ll reduce the tax you owe — increasing your refund

📄 What You Need:

  • Their net income (must be low or zero)

  • Proof that you sent them money or supported them

  • CRA may ask for bank transfers or ID if they live outside Canada
